Snorkeling Sun Protection Basics
Whoa! That’s not the little mermaid’s naturally tan, husky-yet-handsome younger brother…that’s Tanny Mangino! While Tanny isn’t quite a merman, he’s well known in the realm of Poseidon…a.k.a. the ocean. However, Tanny isn’t just visiting any ocean to share his top snorkeling sun protection tips. Tanny has traveled all the way to the Florida Keys and Dry Tortugas National Park, to bring you the snorkeling sun protection tips that only the most weathered, sun-baked seamen know. So strap in, because things are about to get intense with old Tanny at the helm.
Tanny Mangino: Poseidon’s Favorite Servant
Did you know that Tanny Mangino is Poseidon’s favorite servant? It’s fairly common knowledge, but if you asked the supreme ruler of the sea why, he might say it’s due to Tanny’s tan being almost magical in nature. You see, Tanny always practices sun safety. He wears sunscreen, puts on protective clothing and hats, but somehow he still gets tan! If that’s not magic, then I don’t know what is. If there’s one thing that Poseidon respects, it’s magical tanning capabilities mixed with sun safety.
Enough about Tanny’s pseudo-magical tan. Let’s talk about snorkeling sun protection. When you’re in the tropics and in the water all day, you have to take your sun safety game to another level to prevent getting burnt by the sun. The following three snorkeling sun protection tips will help you elevate your sun safety game like you’re Lebron in game seven, so let’s go.
Essential Snorkeling Sun Protection Tips
- Apply sunscreen and cover up before you even get on the boat. Sun exposure is cumulative, so the more time exposed increases your chances of getting a sunburn. So before you get on a boat, or travel to anywhere where you’ll be snorkeling, make sure to apply sunscreen and wear protective clothing to limit your skin’s exposure to the sun.
- Use a water resistant sunscreen (SPF 30 at least) with a proven track record. As you may know from my sunscreen reviews, all sunscreens are not created equally. Pick a sunscreen with staying power in the water. The Sun Bum Face Stick is a great choice for that beautiful face of yours and any of the selections from the Consumer Reports 2017 sunscreen review should do the trick as well. Apply the sunscreen at least 30 minutes in advance of when you plan on entering the water to ensure that the sunscreen has enough time to be absorbed.
- Buy a rash guard and swim cap for the best sun protection. Just like any water-sport, you can only expect your sunscreen to protect you for so long in the water. That’s why you should consider purchasing a rash guard with a strong UPF factor to protect against the sun, especially if you’re planning on snorkeling for extended periods of time. While snorkeling, your back is especially prone to sunburn, so a long sleeve rash guard offers your best protection. If your hair is thin (or you don’t have much), then you should also use a swim cap to avoid getting burnt on the top of your head.
Now that you know the top snorkeling sun protection tips, you’ll be well prepared when you visit Poseidon’s home.
Sincerely,

Tanny no too bright. Tanny needs to get his butt out of the Keys before Irma hits.
No worries; not much tanning done in a storm.
